KCNV Presents EDMiX mixed by Timo Juuti & Hector 87 + Interview

The Ting Tings – One By One (Timo Juuti & Hector 87 Disco Wobblez Bootleg)

INTERVIEW :
KCNV : Who are you? how and when did you meet, and then decided to create the duo ?
Timo Juuti : We are two guys making music and playing it. Hector and I go way back, so I don’t remember exactly how we met. It took us quite a long time before we started making music together…
Hector 87 : I have no idea where, how or why we met.
KCNV : How did you start creating music, and why this style?
H87: One day after listening tons of filter house, we decided to visit the local library.
TJ: We sampled hours of early 80’s disco 12” records, dropped all that into a sampler and went crazy.
KCNV : You started with an oldschool house style, like every bla bla, and then step by step you evolved into something more modern, with an electro touch, and even with some slight dubstep, what you define like disco wobblez. How did you get to producing house, to finally evolve to what you do now ? Can you explain the term ‘’disco wobblez’ to us ?
TJ: You’ve kept a close eye on us! We always wanted to bring something new on the table, and it was an easy start from the old school sounds. We’re both big fans of Crydamoure stuff so why not…
H87: The transition from disco/French house to more modern sound was a natural thing to do.
TJ: I think ”Disco Wobblez” came up when we did our first bootleg and quite unconventionally mixed together disco and dubstep. We’re not creating a new genre here or anything… it just got stuck.
H87: We might not use the term as much in the future, but we will keep the Disco Wobblez alive. At least in a way of working with sounds that are not often combined, even with the risk of being labelled too eclectic.
KCNV : Where did the inspiration or the idea to start produce come from ?
TJ: I think it was the timing… I mean, while all that chord bashing came big, you started hearing disco as well, mostly in really simple house tracks though.
H87: Definitely, it was the timing! I’ve been around to see many different genres grow big… but this must’ve been the only time I wanted to be part of that.
KCNV : What material do you use ?
H87: Our music is a combination of sampled stuff and software synthesis. With this kind of sound it’s a constant balancing between those two techniques.
TJ: Nexus and Vengeance samples, nothing else. Just kidding! We do have some old hardware, but we rarely use it…
KCNV : What are you influences ? may it be a specific artist, a music, a musical movement or even someone you know ?
TJ: There’s tons of different artists that has influenced me, but we also try to borrow things elsewhere, for e.g. from indie rock bands. Not as much specific sound, but more like the overall feel on the track… I know it sounds cliché, but getting that certain vibe to a song is really important for me… us?
H87: Yes. It’s more about the musical content than certain genre or even artist, and if the content is cool then it doesn’t matter where it comes from. So it’s a bit difficult to just name a bunch… but I guess the obvious influences would be 80’s disco, the late 90’s french house and good rock music!
KCNV : If you were to do a collaboration, who would it be with, and why ?
H87: I would love to do a track with Dust Brothers. Their way of sampling is so unique yet musical. They manage to have fun with music without turning it into a joke.
TJ: …I guess we could ask Bootsy Collins to write a bassline for something?
KCNV : How do you see your projects in the years to come ? is there something in perticular that you wish to do ?
TJ: Our full focus is definitely on TJH87 now, but we try to avoid becoming just another DJ / producer thing you know…
H87: We are currently building our live setup, which is definitely something to keep an eye on.
KCNV : Talking about the futur, new stuff to come out, singles, EPs or remixs ?
TJ: Our remix of Free by Combostar ft. Mani Hoffman just came out from La Valigetta, and we uploaded another bootleg to soundcloud which you can now get. The next single is due to be out late this summer and it’s loaded with high expectations.
KCNV : Your top5 favorite tracks right now ?
Lemâitre – Excuse Me
Sami Saari – Swing Thing
LBCK ft. Chuuwee – Real Caviar
DWNTWN – See My Eyes (Beataucue Remix)
Oliver – Dirty Talk
KCNV : If you weren’t DJs producers, what would you do ?
H87: I’d sell my computer
TJ: I have absolutely no idea…
KCNV : You come from a country – Finlande – that doesn’t give birth to a lot of electronic artists. How is the electronic scene over there ? What kind of electro music is most represented over there ?
TJ: Like our success in football championships… going to be huge in 2058.
H87: It’s relatively small and focused on Helsinki, but we got talented people here so anything can happen.
KCNV : The track that would be impossible to hear in one of your sets ?
H87: The Trashmen: Surfin’ Bird
TJ: …I’d play it!
KCNV : How would you react if Paris Hilton played one of your tracks ?
TJ: I try not to set borders on who is allowed to enjoy our music and who isn’t… so I guess my reaction would be somewhere around ”whatever”.
H87: I’d welcome the support!
KCNV : Any last words ?
H87: My favourite pet is tortoise.
Thanks Timo Juuti & Hector 87 for the mixtape and the answers !
Special thanks : Ryan L.
