Mikix The Cat – Ivy EP [Trouble & Bass]
Mikix the Cat returns to the label with a hard-hitting four-track EP full of midnight madness. On his best-selling Trouble & Bass EPs, Freeze and Movinʼ Around, Mike Gnacadja showed how he got his name with devastatingly huge kicks and a catlike agility with his synths. Ivy sees Mikix headed in a more minimal and dark direction (that Berlin influence!), but these tracks still slay the club with a funkiness in the drums that could only be inspired by Mother Africa.
“Back” is a similarly dark beast, with a sound that recalls industrial techno and classic Chicago house updated with crystal-clean production; a long, DJ-friendly intro leads its way into an evil tunnel of pumping bass that will get everyoneʼs hands in the air. “Poison” is some peak-time Berghain business with crescendos of submarine sonar and crazy buildups leading into a marching electro beat that just builds and builds. Haunted vocal stabs, wild and crispy synth rolls and acid squiggles are just a few elements that turn this into a sinister monster.
Chicago also inspires “No Love,” a squelching house flex that will have the ravers shuffling in every aisle. Huge vocal chops and old-school synth melodies combine into something massively dark and sexy here. After the club thereʼs the after party, and thatʼs where “II You” comes in, taking you all the way back to the hotel with an orgasmic blend of cut-up R&B vocals over summery and sinuous summer beats and driving percussive elements.
The Ivy EP shows Mikix moving in a more grown and sexy direction without losing that flavor that makes the club kids lose it. Let this one twist and turn your mind and your body!
